To be eligible for an FAA A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) license, you need to meet specific experience and education requirements. Generally, this involves either 18 months of practical experience working on either airframes or powerplants, or 30 months of experience working on both. Additionally, you need to pass FAA-administered exams.
Specific Requirements:
Experience: You need to have at least 18 months of practical experience in either airframes or powerplants, or 30 months working on both concurrently.
Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
English Proficiency: You must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Exams: You need to pass a series of FAA exams, which are divided into General, Airframe, and Powerplant sections.
Alternative to Experience: You can also become eligible by graduating from an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) or completing the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) training course for military personnel.
In Summary: The FAA A&P license requires a combination of practical experience (or formal training), along with successful completion of FAA-administered examinations. The exact experience requirements depend on whether you are seeking an Airframe, Powerplant, or A&P rating
F.A.A. Eligibility Requirements
The A&P Test Preparation is for applicants who meet FAR 65.71-65.77 only. Under these regulations, you must have a certain type of mechanical experience before the F.A.A. will allow you to take the F.A.A. written exams. The required experience for the powerplant mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of aircraft engine. The required experience for the airframe mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of airframe. If you want both ratings, and your experience was a combination of airframe and powerplant, then you need a total of 30 months experience.
